Culture and Traditional Events

Athlete of the Year

In January 2005, Klášterecké noviny (Klášterec News) organised the first local Athlete of the Year competition. Its purpose was to highlight the success of local athletes taking part in regional, nationwide and even European sporting events. The two-month campaign is concluded by a gala evening during which its winners are awarded prizes. It is accompanied by a wide range of other cultural events. The March Sportsmen’s Ball forms an integral part of the ball season in Klášterec.

Klášterec Spring

The April kindergarten children’s show taking place in the town’s Community Centre has a long-term tradition and is very popular with both the locals and visitors. It has been organised for 13 years.

May-Pole Erection

According to one of the spring traditions, the last day of April should be dedicated to may-pole erection. Although this tradition is popular above all in Southern Moravia, it has been recently gaining popularity in towns, too. As Klášterec does not want to be an exemption, a may-pole is erected at its central square on the last April day every year by the members of shooting club AVZO.

Pious Act

Every May, on the occasion of the anniversary of the end of WWII, and every October, as a remembrance of the creation of independent Czechoslovakia, traditional pious acts take place at local cemetery. As an integral part of this event, wreaths are laid at the tombs of war heroes.

Klášterec Music Fountain

This original music festival has been organised in Klášterec under the patronage of violin virtuoso Jaroslav Svěcený since 2005. As a part of the festival, Jaroslav Svěcený and Dana Vlachová of the Prague Academy of Music conduct training courses for young violinists. All concerts take place in the pleasant environment of local chateau and the Church of Holy Trinity which has excellent acoustic qualities. This year, the performers included inter alia the Virtuosi Pragenses Orchestra with famous solo trumpet player of the Czech Philharmonics Miroslav Kejmar, multi-genre composer and pianist Richard Pachman, singer Dita Hořínková, excellent Czech guitar player Lubomír Brabec or opera singer and popular television hostess Martina Kociánová. Jaroslav Svěcený not only performs at every concert but also introduces all other artists. Klášterec Music Fountain takes place at the beginning of July.

Live Chateau Scenes

For the last five years, an exclusive event titled Live Chateau Scenes has been taking place at Klášterec Chateau on one of the holiday weekends. The visitors – instead of listening to the usual lecture on the Chateau’s history – can admire live scenes inspired by famous paintings and executed by professional actors and students of the Prague Academy of Arts. This event, whose main purpose is to promote tourism in the region of Ústí nad Labem, is organised by the Modua Agency located in Chomutov.

Eurokov

The Eurokov summer symposium of craft blacksmiths and metal sculptors from all over Europe took place for the first time as early as in 1998 when twelve blacksmiths from the Czech Republic and Germany accepted an invitation of Karel Meloun. Their joint sculpture titled Eurototem was to symbolise European collectivism. It represented the beginning of a long-term tradition. Because it is organised biannually, the public and the artists had to wait for the next Eurokov until 2000. At that time, the participants came not only from the Czech Republic and Germany, but also from Austria, Russia and Denmark. They showed their craft in the atelier of Karel Meloun and in Chateau Park, in front of Sala Terrena. Their joint work was titled Eurozahrada (Eurogarden). The third Eurokov, in 2002, was negatively affected by the floods as several invited artists were unable to come. Nevertheless, the event attracted a considerable number of visitors. In 2004, the visitors had an opportunity to admire all works of art not only during Eurokov itself, but also for an additional month at Chateau Klášterec. The most popular event by far was night smithing accompanied by an extensive cultural programme. The last Eurokov, whose main motif was Celtic craft, took place in 2006. The next Eurokov is scheduled for August 2008.

Safe Conclusion of Summer Holidays

Just before the beginning of every school year the Municipal Police Force organises an event titled Safe Conclusion of Summer Holidays in Klášterec designated for school children. All visitors, both children and their parents, are informed of the work of all teams of the town’s integrated emergency services, from police officers to fire fighters and medical personnel. The programme includes, for instance, the extinguishing of a burning vehicle, the rescue of an injured person or pistol shooting. It also includes some less serious events, such as “war” with antiriot policemen or jumping into fire extinguishing foam.

Klášterec Promenade

Klášterec Promenade, a one-day municipal festival that was organised for the first time in 2006 on the occasion of the opening of the town’s newly reconstructed square and spa complex, is scheduled to become an integral part of cultural calendar, promoting Klášterec as a spa resort. It takes place at three main areas, the square, the spa complex and the Chateau Park. Its extensive programme includes a traditional village fair and craft presentation, numerous children’s attractions, an exhibition of historical vehicles and esplanade concerts of brass and folk ensembles. The whole event culminates at the town’s central square with a concert of famous singers and later on with fireworks. Even though the event has only been organised twice so far, it already has an excellent reputation, with people arriving from the entire region. Klášterec Promenade takes place at the beginning of September.

Klášterec Theatre Harvest

The non-competitive festival of amateur theatre ensembles Klášterec Theatre Harvest was founded in 2003. At that time, Klášterec had no less than 8 amateur theatre ensembles, which is something of a record for a town whose population totals mere 16 thousand. However, the festival is not limited to local ensembles, with the organisers inviting interesting troupes from all over the region. Last year, for instance, they introduced the best amateur ensemble in the Czech Republic, Rádobydivadlo Klapý. Klášterec Theatre Harvest takes place at the end of October and the beginning of November in the town’s Community Centre. A special daily newspaper, the Žňoviny, is published during the festival.

Christmas Tree

At the beginning of every December, the lights of a giant Christmas tree standing in front of the Town Hall are turned on. On this occasion, the entire town square and all surrounding streets are full of the locals as well as visitors and Christmas market stands. The Christmas atmosphere is further enhanced by Christmas carols and live scenes from the Nativity. Everyone is looking forward to the evening when the Christmas tree is turned on and the sky is illuminated by magnificent fireworks.
